Lightning over Lake Michigan

The storm system that has been in the models for the past week produced a fast-moving squall line that blew from Wisconsin across Lake Michigan. Kurt Hulst and I were there on the shore just north of Holland, Michigan, to catch the action.

Kurt is a great lightning photographer. Look for his photos of last night’s storm on his blog.

As for me, I’m a neophyte when it comes to lightning. Shooting at night, the problem I encounter is focus. Unfortunately, most of my shots were too blurred to crop, and since I was shooting wide angle, cropping is essential. However, a couple shots didn’t turn out too badly. The one shown here is the best of the lot. Click on it to enlarge it.

  1. Bob, I have mine up on my blog. Your shot is nice, to bad it was little out of focus. I wanna see how your other shots turned out. I know it can be frustrating when your shots of lightning turn out fuzzy its happened to me plenty. Just gotta find something to focus on and that’s why i ran up the stairs and focused on the distant lights in the camp. That is the main challenge when shooting over the lake at night. There’s nothing out there to focus on.

  2. Yeah, that’s a good solution. However, my Sigma lens likes to creep, and I’d likely have gone back out of focus by the time I made it back to my position. What I’m going to have to do is figure out a pre-set or two and then mark them on the lens.

    Your shots turned out nice!

  3. Ah yes I forgot we had talked about that.

    Thanks
