Storm Chasing

It’s All About the Storm

Rotating Wall Cloud in Central Illinois Welcome to my weather page–the page that expresses the “storm” component of Stormhorn.com. Look here and in the sub-menus for resources that are of interest to storm chasers and weather buffs.

Learning Resources

Want to learn what it takes to chase storms? Or, if you’re an experienced chaser, would you like to expand your knowledge? Storm chaser Jason Boggs has done a superb job compiling a large array of online resources that will take you from the basics to advanced material. This is the most comprehensive collection of online educational links for storm chasers that I’ve come across.

F5 Data Mesoanalysis Maps

I’ve made the switchover from RUC to F5 Data’s new, proprietary mesoanalysis maps. My point in doing so is to offer storm chasers and weather buffs something different and useful rather than duplicate information that is already available from numerous other online sources.

The tornado indices include one developed by F5 creator Andy Revering. It tends to be pretty choosy about triggering, so don’t expect it to always appear when the STP does.

Also, I’ve replaced MLCINH with the APRWX cap, another proprietary index that measures convective inhibition. You won’t find it or the APRWX tornado index elsewhere unless you subscribe to F5 Data.

CAVEAT: The maps will update hourly only as long as I’m online with F5 Data in server mode. I am in fact online quite a bit, but not 24/7. I’m a copywriter, not a web server, and I shut my computer down at night and whenever I step out of the apartment. Don’t worry, though. The data will most likely be current when you really need it to be–because I’ll be using it too.
